How Do You Take Care of Your Piercings and Tattoos?

How Do You Take Care of Your Piercings and Tattoos?

Our staff in Portland and Ogunquit, ME can teach you

You need to know how to properly take care of your tattoos to help you heal and prevent infection. The Almost Famous Tattoo & Piercings crew recommends the following steps to take care of your tattoo once your session’s over:

  • Remove the bandage after one hour
  • Wash the area with antibacterial soap
  • Pat it dry with a clean towel
  • Apply a thin layer of ointment or H2Ocean Tattoo Aftercare two to three times a day for four to five days

For at least two weeks after your appointment, avoid direct sunlight, tanning beds, saunas, hot tubs, pools and the ocean. Exposing your tattoo to any of these increases your risk of infection. Don’t over lubricate, pick at or rebandage your new tattoo, either. If you follow all of these steps, your body will heal properly, and you’ll have a beautiful tattoo you’ll love for years to come.

You need to wash your hands before cleaning your dermal piercings. Almost Famous Tattoo & Piercings recommends using a sterile solution or wound wash three to four times a day on both ends of your piercing and rinsing the area well afterward to remove any residue.

You should also clean the area once daily with antibacterial soap. Soaking your piercing in a saline solution a few times a week will also help you heal properly. Don’t touch, play with or rotate your piercing while it’s healing. Avoid using rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, bactine and other ointments, too.

For oral piercings, rinse your mouth well with an antimicrobial or antibacterial, alcohol-free mouthwash after you eat, drink or smoke. Smoking increases the risk of infection and lengthens healing time, so you may want to stop for a while after we pierce you. To reduce the swelling, use ice cubes and take ibuprofen as directed for the first 48 hours. If you follow these tips, you’ll have a piercing that will enhance your look and style.
